Hi I'm Mitch from Jandakot in WA. I'm 17 and a keen organic gardener with a small orchard of about 300m squared. I've always had a keen interest in organic gardening and self sufficiency especially when it comes to growing fruit and veg. I have a number of aquaponics systems at home and grow most of my own food. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and learning lots of new things. |

Haha. Had to find a picture resizer that worked on windows 7. Now that I've got one though, I'll be posting up lots and lots of photos. Not that I take many, but meh. It's got a long way to go!!! I've only been working in it for just over two years now and have planted almost all of the orchard in that time. I was adding to my orchard database / spreadsheet just the other day and counted that I've planted about forty plants so far. Hopefully plant another twenty of so different ones come autumn. The only problem I have is the damn rabbits, they eat everything!!! All of the plants have to be fenced off from the rabbits and chickens but somehow they still manage to eat the young bark and almost ring-bark the trunks. Does anyone know of how to deter rabbits or anything that will stop them coming into my yard?

No idea, maybe you could throw around some carrots soaked in cheap brandy and get up early next morning to pick up the pesky rabbits before they sober up.Never tried it myself but know somebody who swears by it. |

I cage the bottom 12 inches of all trees new with chickenwire and it stops the rabbits, cheap and effective and when the tree is bigger the rabbits will leave it alone and you can more the cage to new plants. You can get rabbit poison, try the local farm shop. To do it safely and prevent other amimals eating it just put 4 bricks on the ground, a sheet of tin on top and something to weigh the tin down. Spread the poison grain under the tin so only rabbits and not kangaroos get get at it. I do not use the poison myself and I am not sure but it is probably 1080 I prefer organic rabbit control Attachment: GetAttachment.jpg [ 39.81 KiB | Viewed 11398 times ] Just have to get then used to working night shift when all the rabbits are out. |
