| Post subject: | Hi from Newcastle, NSW |
Hi there, I am Smeg and I am a mad keen gardener and amateur angler although I am totally poo at the latter. I have converted the front of my small Mayfield property (560sqm) into a fairly productive fruit and veg garden. After 6 years at this property and many incarnations, I now have built 6 large raised garden beds (600mm high) to ease my aching back and also to combat a poor soil quality issue in this area. I have a few fruit trees ranging from citrus, stone fruit, apples, avocados (in pots) and an olive tree. To compliment my attempts at symbiotic and nearly organic gardening, I have several composting bins (tumblers and tubs), a worm farm (now 10 years old) and 4 very interesting chickens one of which I am certain practices some sort of voodoo or similar dark magic in the wee hours so I am very careful as to what I say about her. Finally I have two cattle dogs one of which follows the chickens around with his nose only a few inches from their bums in the hope of a little snack. With his short term attention issues he occasionally drifts off which causes some arguments when the leisurely pursued chicken stops suddenly. I am intrigued with the concept and future effects of aquaponics and have been researching into this process for some time. I am also attending a short course on Recirculating Aquaculture and Aquaponics here in Newcastle later in September. I am very keen to learn as much as possible and develop a network with likeminded people. I aim towards obtaining some acreage in the near future to put all the training and experiences gained from the little Mayfield house into full use and production. I hope to first be able to feed my family with my own sustainable produce then perhaps expand into a commercial venture if possible. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all here. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, want to learn from my mistakes or have a chat. Cheers and beers Smeg |

Sounds like a good plan Smeg, acreage is fun if you like never running out of things to do. At least there is enough space for everything. Have you got photos of your place? Welcome to the forum. |

yeah I took some photos just before the windy day last week the violated my potato patch. I will try and upload some this weekend. It will give the viewers an idea of how much you can produce from a small front suburban garden. Cheers and beers Smeg |

G'day Smeg! You sure can get some good productivity from a town block, but I do share your ambition of a few acres to really ramp things up Is your smeg Red Dwarf related or other? |

Hi there, Yes, Red Dwarf is one of the reasons people assume what Smeg is for and I'll agree that is where it originated. The other I have been assured can be combatted with a genocidal strength topical cream. I am aiming for the largest plot possible so I can have a comfortable bushland buffer for walks, wildlife, trees, birds, bees and a few well stocked dams. My plan for gardening is to have a modest orchard and a condensed (yet expandable) aquaponic system without the need for soil. If I can minimise my footprint to say, 5-10% of a 100 acre bush block I would be stoked! I hope to steer away from the need for livestock although, chooks, ducks and a curly tailed composting machine/pet will probably occur... "Are you sure you want to move to red alert Sir? It does mean changing the bulb." Cheers and beers Smeg |

I just had a peep at your AP system Gazza. I hope all is still going swimmingly as I only fiddled with the first page of posts. I certainly hope your marron are still with us or have gone to a better purpose i.e. post digestive compost! Good system with a relatively small footprint. If I managed to get my way and got an AP system on our little house block it would be Lorena Bobbitt time and you would be calling me Smeg the Eunuch! Some things I must be patient for. I am looking forward to the AP short course next weekend here in Newy. "I'm gonna eat you little fishy..." |

Oh, and speaking of Jobbie, has anyone happened across the website for Milkwood Farm? They are an educational permaculture farm in country NSW. I was reading about their humanure system of composting their families mookie stinks into usable plant nutrients to support their crops and orchard. Very interesting reading. Having an affliction that causes me to violently wretch whenever I encounter one of my daughters mud dragons, even throwing up on her a few times, I find the humanure system somewhat challenging. There are some assurances in the story but I suggest you read and make up your own mind. Definitely only for the rural areas with shires that will permit such systems. I really cant see Newcastle City Council approving a homemade freckle fillet fertiliser facility in my humble back yard. And, knowing my neighbours, the may start taking liberties...... The reality is that we discard so much usable material that will greatly benefit our land and produce with this indoctrinated reliance on chemical fertilisers and the like. Attitudes need to change dramatically. If I can now change a nappy without heaving out a kidney, who knows what the universe will bring....... "My my Listy, are you nervous or is that not a small sewage plant appearing in your trousers?" |
