Soil blockers make different size blocks of soil for planting into. As roots don't grow out the sides into the air they tend to stop and grow down. I've got 3 size blockers that make 20mm 40mm & 100mm blocks. The 20mm ones are good for fitting more seedlings on heating mats and with a square insert for the 40mm blocks they can be placed into the next size for planting out. If the seedlings are keep longer they fit into the 100mm blocks.
I've been using worm casting for the 20mm blocks and a sifted mix of potting mix, castings & blood & bone for the larger blocks.

When made with worm castings the blocks can go into an AP system without washing the soil off the rooots.

They seem to be a great idea. I checked them on the internet, but you would have to need a lot of blocks to pay the price and delivery charge.

This set was 100GBP delivered. So about $160 ish at the time. But you can get away with just the 40mm blocker.

I'd love to have the use for it but unfortunately I'm not quite there yet. I struggle to plant out the blands that I buy at the moment. One day when I get some acres ... :)

I reckon anyone who is fairly handy would be able to knock up a similar thing. Bit of welding should do the trick.

Gotta say thanks to ya Duff - I never even knew they existed before your post.

I've started planting out seedlings in blocks. You can see the roots at the base of the block. May have to use less castings as the plants come up that fast they they strech a little before you notice them.
