Wow, BD, well done! That's some fish. You'll get a few feeds of that. Looks like a nice day for fishing, too.

But, like they say, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office.

Very nice mulloway Dave - Bet it was fun to catch as they're pretty damn strong.

Cheers Chillidude, now you have just opened up a name calling debate! :scared2:

Mulloway or Black Jewfish?
Same fish or different?

I used to catch Mulloway in WA years ago, having lived in WA for 24 years I had it pretty ingrained in my head on what a Mulloway was, until I moved to the NT.
(well, I was born in the NT, just had a break for 24 years before moving back :D )

Enter the Black Jewfish......

People up this way get pretty passionate about us Sandgroupers calling their beloved "Black Jew" a "Mulloway".

I havent researched it much but I've heard quite a lot that the two arent the same fish but are very closely related. :dunno:

Mulloway is the most southern species belonging to the Scinaenid Family with many species present in the north of Australia. The most notable species is the ‘black jew’, which is often confused with the mulloway but distinguishable by the slightly stouter body, smaller more compact scales, firmer texture and darker appearance. Also known as butterfish and jewies, they are perhaps the most prized sporting fish that is in ready reach of the everyday angler.

Actually found a nice way to cook it too, while we were sitting around having a beer afterwards (as you do), decided to light a fire, then thought what the hell, cook some of the salmon as basic as possible.. So using a pitch fork as a cooking utensil, we cut some thin strips of salmon and cooked them over the open fire. It tasted great with a slightly smokey flavour, and a bit of crisp on the outside from the hot fire.

Hmmmm, quick cooking over a very hot, open fire certainly does the trick for the normally very average tasting Australian salmon.

wow you west aussies are a bit odd, gardening tools aren't normally taken on fishing trips on this side of oz. Is the action so light on that you have time to garden whilst fishing?
:P

We west Aussies tend to go home after we finish fishing.... :)

Was a bit quiet down there though, one salmon and one herring, while my mate Luke caught nothing, again..... :dunno:

Saw a salmon swim past that had a white plastic float dragging behind it, that was amusing....
