Getting enough shade in the back yard is a problem. A lot of plants can't handle the full sun but trees take so long to grow. I've got 4 Paulownia trees that have been in the ground for a couple of months now and have more than doubled in height. They can grow 20' in a year.

About 10 years ago there was a bit of a scam involving Paulownia trees in WA (and possibly other states as well), they were trying to sell them to farmers as the best thing since sliced bread claiming 20 foot growth in 1 year, wood as hard as Jarrah and light as Balsa wood.

A mate planted a test patch of only 1 acre (thankfully not more), they required heavy irrigation ($$$$) and after 10 years they have just hit the 20 foot mark :old:

I believe they are a tropical plant and not really suited to most of Australias climate, might do well in North QLD (nice place, pity its full of Queenslanders).

For what you are using them for Duff they will be just fine. :thumb:

So far the biggest one has grown 1mtr in 2 months. They do well in banana country. I plan on knocking the top off mine when they are around the 3mtr mark so they branch out. I was surprised they handled the heat out here with the large leaves.

The leaves make great protein food for earth worms as well.

One of the trees I can't look over anymore. I'm 5/11 so that not bad for the time its been in the ground. The ex has a couple put in at the same time in different soil that are no where near these ones. I put it down to water. Hers gets the a soaker hose for an hr+ per day and one died from root rot. Mine I don't water much at all. She has now stopped the watering and they are growing again.
