Does anybody know how many kg of olives you need for it to be worthwhile to get them pressed into olive oil? And does anybody know where you would take them near perth?

Give Arnaud Courtin of the York Olive Oil Company a ring on 0429 412 200. I wrote an article about his business a year or so ago for Small Farms. He takes other people's oil for pressing and will give you a report on the quality of the oil as well. I'm not sure whether he needs a minimum amount or just charges a minimum however much you have. I seem to remember he has a minimum run of 200 kgs, but might put several people's olives together and divide the oil on the same ratio as the input. If you don't have as many as you need, he also has pick-your-own olives which could augment your olives, if he has any left.

If you have no luck there, try Iopolos in Wanneroo (ph 4017 932 874).

We've used both and recommend them.

That's an interesting little press... Don't know if it can do olives unfortunately, it's not in their list of things you can press, but the seeds it can press looks interesting, over 1.5L of canola an hour.

Going to pick all my olives and take them to York this weekend to have the oil extracted.
Never done it before, hope it works out.

Nice, let us know what happens...

I checked my olive tree yesterday, it's an eating olive rather than oil olive and although I'd seen a few olives on it, I was hoping that as the fruit ripened more would become obvious on the tree.. However, the olives have ripened up and become black now and there really aren't very many on there... They are HUGE olives but not very many...... :(

Mine aren't the large eating ones so I guess they are good for oil.
The trees are really old and big, the olives are a lot bigger this year than the previous 4 years though. I just hope I can pick enough to make it worthwhile.

Picked all day from 7.30 till 6 and only managed 70kg of olives.
The trees are very big and you'd need a cherry picker to get them all.
Off to York this morning to get them pressed.
Anybody chance a guess at how many litres of oil?

Depending on the quality of olives, I will guess 13 to 14 litres, Oldute. :thumb:

70kg still sounds like a lot..... I'll have a guess at 10 litres.

Well. It ended up being 65kg because I measured with bathroom scales.
So the winner is..................................................

EB! :thumb:

We got 9 litres which they said was about average yield.
The oil is delicious and very high quality. Very happy with the end result.
Looks like I need to get the tress lopped so that they arent as high. Heaps of olives that are too high to get too.
Will definitely do it again but will get some help so that I can harvest more kg.

Is there somewhere that hires the machine that shakes the tree to get the top fruit? They are used for olives and nut trees.

In comparison our (kalamata) olive tree we planted 1½ years ago has a crop of 1 olive. We aren't rushing out for a cheese to go with it just yet!
