Everyone seems to grow such a lot of food and I wonder what happens to it all. Do you have huge families? lots of friends living in apartments? or are you madly preserving all your produce? If it's the latter, I would love to know how you're doing it.

I give a lot away and the chickens and dog eat some. I pickle some and dry others. Fish get a lot of the greens.

We supply the whole family as well as friends with Pumpkins for months most years. Last year unfortunately our pumpkins (always Jap - taken from seeds of previous year) were substandard due to unseasonal rains. They normally last for many months, but these did not :-(. Didn't get around to planting a vine this year, but will at least get a couple to use for seed next year from some vine that did not die back at the end of the last season.

I've not really got around to do any preserving of anything (time poor), but as well as the pumpkins other things I grow that keep for many months include:

- potatoes, always keep for months untill all eaten
- garlic, keeps from one season to the next ie my last harvest is always still edible when I am harvesting my next 12 months later. Try keeping store bought in the cupboard for 12 months.

Soup. :ahhh:

They do last a while. Most people keep them outside as well.

Everyone who comes to our house has to leave with a bag of cherry tomatoes and rainbow chard. :whip:

Any excess of ours goes to the budgies, friends and compost. Pretty much in that order. :hello:

It's been nearly a full time occupation dealing with our surplus of cherry tomatoes. So far we have pasta sauce, tomato paste (it's amazing how a bucket of tommies can boil down to a cup of paste) and last week we tried oven dried cherry toms for the first time (this one gets the thumbs up from me :thunbs: )

We also have plentiful parsnips which have been going in soups, gratins and as of yesturday, parsnip chutney! It went down a treat with our ploughmans lunch.
