Timing is really important, as mentioned above, plant out on shortest day and harvest on longest day, [as a guide]. I sow seed end of summer.
Depth of planting is not all that critical as I find the bulb naturally comes at ground level, the problems start when dirt or mulch gets heaped up around them.
They hate weeds and close planting, for big onions they need to be 20 to 25 cm apart.
Try only to ground water them as water down or around the stems seems to create rot in hotter weather and dont water at all once a good size and some leaves start to brown off
They not happy in hot humid climates

I've never had dramas growing onions...in fact I have them in the rows between the corn...I throw heaps of fert in there and have 3 big rotating sprinklers to water everything... :dunno:
It just appears to work for me so I'll stick with it :thumb:
