I've allways had canna lilies growing as a wind break and a source of mulch. But I'm now replacing it with arrowroot. Kinda looks the same but the roots are edible. And it grows a lot faster. A good year round potato substitute. ![]()

They love the water and I've left the AC hose at there base for weeks with only vigorous grow as a result. Google has pictures of them growing at the edge of water. Not sure about the flowers. |

I'm guessing they wouldn't grow at all well here then, too damn dry! |

we've got two types of arrowroot. one is the same as Duff's, Queensland Arrowroot (Canna edulus). The other one is West Indian or Jamaican Arrowroot Maranta arundinacea the WE Arrowroot, is a lot smaller, only to 1m |

Do they have smaller roots as well, ie, smaller yield? |

I don't know yet. They have only been in the ground for about a year. The WE plant was only a single stalk when I started it, and it has comeback this summer with about 12 stalks. The Qld plants are only a few months old, but easily 2m high. |

I keep meaning to try it but it kept growing so I didn't want to knock the plant around. The bits I put in the AP system have gone nuts. I might pull a few plants and see what its like cooked. I tried a bit raw, tasted like raw potato. |
