Don't ever cook corn. Just eat it raw off the cob. Have a Red aztec that I want to plant next.
At least people like it when you give them fresh corn.

Check out the corn in my Aquaponics system. :thunbs:

Its probably about four months old, roughly. Its a heirloom variety, white corn, i think. :) Can't wait to harvest it!!!

When exactly do you harvest the corn?? I found websites advising to pinch the kennels and see if the juice is milky, but this involves pulling back the silks. And if they are not ready, you cannot easily put the silks back... and I get concern that this would affect the entire cob...

Is it possible to know that it is ready without intrusive tests??

When the silks go brown and the cob feels full. You get a feel for it after a while.

Max hybrid corn.

In AP it may not matter but in the soil if you plant the corn in a trench you can back fill over the second roots to allow then to feed more. I also try and trim any side shoots.

Went out there today, the corns grown another six inches or so. :) Except I'm not sure when to harvest this type of corn, the silks have changed from a pale yellow to a ruby red in the past few days. There is also a few corn cobs that have come away from the trunk. I imagine this means that they are ready to harvest.

Any ideas?

Wow, you weren't joking Mitch, they are really red... And red roots as well..

I'd say leave it a bit yet, the idea is that the silks are meant to die off and go brown before you harvest.

Wonder what colour the silks are on a brown corn? :dunno:

The leaves on my corn are turning brown and withering... Is it because it is too hot?? It seems like from most photos here, there is no shade cloth over the corn anyways?? The silks are just starting to look brown...

Corn leaves do over time turn brown. This is usually because they are drawing the nutrients from the older leaves to fill the cobs or put on new growth. The only time to be concerned, about brown leaves, is when they are the new leaves on the plant. :) Hope this helps.

I see... well the corn is certainly not putting on new growth so hopefully they are filling the cob then... it would be good to at least have some home grown corn to eat this year...

Post subject:  Re: Corn

My corn has now produced up to three cobs from one node!! Which I have never ever seen before. It seems so strange. The first cobs have almost finished filling out now and I was hoping to harvest them next week. But now that they have cobs growing right next to them I imagine I won't be able to. :(
