A few years ago I went on a bit of a tomato frenzy, grew 20 or 30 odd varieties. Very interesting to grow so many and taste the differences between varieties.

Sweetest one was a grape tomato in the top picture, favourite all round tomato was probably Cherokee Chocolate or one of the brandywines.

Below are Amish Paste tomatoes, probably the biggest tommies I had grown.

Been a bit slack this year, don't have many tomatoes planted, though I still have some saves seed, I'll see how viable it still is.

Great pics EB - am planning a tomato frenzy of my own once my AP system is up and running. Trouble is that won't be until next summer I guess as it's getting a bit late in the season thanks to my builder :bat: - bummer

I love growing tomatoes, they go well in my sauces and the cherry varieties are so tasty.

At present I have the following growing - Burke's Backyard Italian, San Mazarno, Lemon Drop, Green Zebra, Black Russian, Grape, Tommy Toes and Tomato Berries.

They look great EB, do you have any trouble with the black russians. We seem to suffer a lot of disease and bug infestations with them. And yet we have nowhere near the same kind of trouble with the Tommy toes or even the mortgage lifters.

I also have had trouble with Black Russians.
This Year I am stuffed! Having a major problem with Green Stink Bugs!
I think they are called 'Harlequin Beetles'
They breed at a frightening rate and I dont use poisions because We are right next to the River. :dunno:

I had a lot of grubs in my dirt tomatoes early this season. Dont know what they were. I have planted some cherry tomatoes in my aquaponics bed which are flying along.

VB, do try Peron toms, should be more suitable for your hot/humid area

On pruning tomatoes

I know to prune the off shoots and strip all leaves below the fruit set, but when do you strip the leaves? is just as the fruit begins to grow or when the fruit is the size you want it?

Thanks Steve, it seems the leaves are stripped after the flower forms before the fruit sets

Have one gb with tomatoes from last year that didn't produce any fruit. I could of helped with the flowers but was too lazy. :D The plants grew off the gb and along the ground and now in there second year have started growing again. Tomatoes are setting everywhere. They look like beefsteak ish type. I may have to trim the plants a little and bag a few of the tomatoes.

I planted the pruning and have the biggest producing tomato plant ever.
It out lived and out produced its mother
So I have taken a shoot of that and going for the trifecta.

I have romas still producing from last year but don't particularly like them so they will go in the next few weeks. Bent my last years beefsteak (I think) over and planted the pruned stem in the ground and left it for two weeks before cutting the original trunk and root off after reading that they would grow this way. It still seems happy and is fruiting.


As far as favourites go I think green zebras are the best cooked tomatoes I have ever eaten, fantastic for breaky with bacon and eggs. Have put one in again this year. I have a couple of brandywines that I grew from seed this year that I am really looking forward to trying and also have the obligatory couple of cherry tomatoes and tommy toe.

This happened to self seeded cherry tomato it looked like it was dead then re shot from a dead looking branch that re rooted as it was un staked
Its been producing for months

Expecting some good tomato photos from everybody this summer guys. I've put in 14 heirloom varieties into the AP system as of about 5 weeks ago and they all seem to be doing pretty well so far - fingers crossed.
