I tried to search the forum but 'seeds' are mentioned too often. Let me start by asking about the common stuff - Bell/sweet pepper (Capsicum) Chillies All varieties of tomato Cucumber family Has any one had constant success at using seeds from the vegetables they were about to consume or were picked especially for their seeds. I ask this because I told my new business partner it was possible. I know it is but someone with more experience might shed light on the skills needed for a constant supply of fresh and FREE seeds. Talking of FREE plants, does anyone use tomato plant cuttings (or others) to grow new plants quicker and consistently. I have had good roots come out from a cutting of a tomato branch by putting it in just water, but the transplanting killed it. Love to hear the ideas chaps and chaplettes |

Tommies are easy. Squeeze out the juice and seeds from a good very ripe tomato into a cup or bowl. Add some water and stir it up. Leave it sitting on a window sill or similar for about a couple weeks, it will ferment and brew. Strain out the seeds and rinse them under clean water in a sieve. Then I tip them out onto some paper towel and let them dry once I've spread them out a bit. Once very dry, fold up the paper towel and store it in a sealed plastic bag. Planting is easy, you just tear off bits of paper towel with the seeds on, and plant that. When planting in a pot for division later once they have sprouted, you can often tear of a big piece of paper towel with lots of seeds spread over it. I've done these many times and it works well.... |

We collect our own pumpkin seeds each year to replant the following year. Just let the seeds dry on some paper towel. Hubby swashed some damaged tomatoes in an AP bed and left them sitting there. We now have tomato seedlings growing there! |

Chillis grow very well from seed, make sure the fruit is mature. However it loses its viability after a year. |

Just a note on saving seeds. If you have more than one type of plant(eg roma and ox heart) the seeds can be a mix. So don't be surprised if the seed you save from one fruit may grow plants with different characteristics. Also good for making your own varieties. |

In fact, I've got six seedlings growing right now from Anaheim seeds that were harvested in 2006. Propper storage is the key. I store my seeds in the refrigerator inside Ziplock bags. It works even better if you freeze them, but they need to be sufficiently dry. |

 Just gather your ripest fruit & save its seed -- let them dry then wash the seeds really good -- let them dry really well --- store in plastic bags inside your freezer.. That the way nature does it --- just look around the ground in the spring where seed from seed have come up from the previous year.
