I've always wanted to grow Kang Kong (Ipomoea aquatica) but never got to it until late 2009 when I filled a 1,000 litre tank with some yabbies and native fish.

It seems to be doing alright as I've only had it in for about 6 weeks - the trick now is to leave it alone longe enough until I have enough there to regularly harvest without decimating it. It'll be a challenge that's for sure.

The tank it is in is shaded for around ¾ of the day - maybe it's be better with more sun :dunno:

I've cooked and eaten it plenty of times but have always had to buy it. Anyone else out there growin' it ?

We grew a lot of it at the shop last summer, can't find any pics, but it grew well in a growbed over hanging and growing down into the fish tank. We have planted it again this year and it's just starting to germinate. If your interested in trying it, we have about 6 or 8 packets of seed here at the shop.

I am growing it as well... Here's a picture... it is one of the asian vege that can handle the full sun in my growbed... the others aren't doing so well.. or not even growing... shade.. I know...

I believe if you leave a few leaves and stem on, it would continue growing... but with kang kong, plant as much as you can... because a supermarket bag full of kang kong after frying (hmm.. sambal chilli kang kong) would only be similar to a plate of asian vege served at the restaurant... not a lot...

If you cannot make it to BYAP shop, try asian grocery shop... The packaging of the KANG KONG is labelled ENTSAI... actually I can do better.... here's the packaging... it is probably two years old, but the seeds are still germinating...

I will probably order on-line from the BYAP site the postage is low for light stuff like seeds and they have heaps of other interesting vegies I want to try.

I will germinate the seeds in the GBs and then transfer to the fish tank and grow in the water to free up GB space for other plants.

I assume they grow fine hanging over the edge of the FT like chillidude is doing or will the silver perch kill the plant by eating the roots?

If we don't have kang kong in the online shop, just order a different seed and send me a PM or email letting me know you want kang kong.

Silvers will eat the roots, my floating raft of water cress has no roots, the spindly water cress relies on just having roots in the foam, soon as they poke out they get chewed off.

I tried attaching a layer of shade cloth to the bottom of the floating raft... leave a bit of gap between the shade cloth and the raft... the plants were growing alright with roots filling up the gap, until I had to cover it all up to get rid of algae blooms...

EB, I like your avatar (I believe that what it is called)... very imaginative kungfu sequence... a bit of a John Woo fan, are you??

Not really, just went searching for avatars and it was something that grabbed my attention, I wanited to check that uploading of avatars worked..

Well obviously the guy who created it knows that most action sequence must incorporate a slow motion part otherwise it would not be impressive...
