Just wondering if anyone has a favourite fertilizer/Manure to use to grow their veges. I know there are heaps out there, but there are heaps of people out there too with their own knowledge and experiences and i thought it might be a good topic also. |

I reckon the more it stinks, the better it works. Mushroom compost and an assortment of manures are good, and I like a bit of miracle grow. |

I mostly use cow manure and chook poo because it is easily available to me, but here are my opinions on manures. Cow - well broken down because of the digestive action of the multiple stomachs meaing the nutrients are readily available for the plants to access, citrus trees seem to love straight cow poo dumped at their drip line as a fertiliser/mulch but beware that a lot of seeds will germinate from uncomposted cow poo. I try to soak mine for 3 months in an old bath full of water to make the seeds swell and burst to reduce germination rates. Chook - very powerful stuff, using in too high concentrations can burn the plants so spread it out a bit. Horse - don't digest grain or stems as well as cows so not as well broken down or nutrient rich, this means that a lot of undigested grains will sprout which can either be seen as weeds or free green manure if you wat to turn it over into the soil. Fibreous nature means it adds a lot of soil structure and acts as a mulch too. You can often get horse manure for free. Sheep - Natural slow release fertiliser pellets, just spread on top if soil and let nature take its course, don't seem to produce at may weeds, I think because sheep realy grind every grain when the eat. Human - Has to be well composted in a purpose built composting toilet for about a year before use to ensure all pathogens are dead. http://milkwood.net/2010/11/23/the-most ... -the-west/ http://milkwood.net/2011/04/18/compost- ... -the-bins/ |

Hmmm, never used pig poo but from what I remember it is generally very well broken down by the time it leaves the pig so it should be pretty good. |

Good info Simo We have some pretty crappy soil here in kal so we put a bit of work into our garden beds. Ive alway put my money on mushrom compost, home made compost, chicken and cow poo. And usually a bit of blood and bone and dynamic lifter additions monthly. Once my raft bed is operational it will have a swirl filter that will catch goodies that will also go in the garden. Oh, and any fish guts etc from the AP. |
