Caveats - I am not a particularly good gardener, not much experience etc.
I have some celery plants approx 400mm high, 120mm dia at the base.
Loads of thin stalks, profuse growth of leaves.
The base where the stalks end and the roots start is a huge tangled mass with quite a large root mass.
It looks nothing like the celery that is purchased in the shops but it smells and tastes excellent, very celeryie (I know theres no such word but hopefully you know what I mean)
Is this normal or am I missing something in their cultivation?

our celery smells divine it is stronger in flavour and aroma. I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy the extra goodness.

Nope, definitely celery and tasted fantastic and all eaten.
Makes me wonder what type they grow for the shops.
I remember my grand dads celery being mounded up with soot from the chimney to keep it white

Heard of newspaper wrapped around the stems and PVC pipes to keep it white

I always wondered what the purpose of that was, thanks Snags.

Could be lovage (celery leaf) which looks and tastes like celery but doesn't get the same thick stems????

My dad used to grow the celery with milk cartons around them, the card ones to keep them straight and white.
Not sure why he wanted them white?

Should ask next time I speak with him.

I used the cardboard milk cartons but they didnt seem to do much except keep the stems tightly bunched
