Post subject:  Mulch
Just put in a garden (not vegies :sad2: ), and need to mulch it.
What is a good mulch that wont blow into the pool?
I had a look at the local garden centres and they all have a lot of wood chips in them that tend to blow into the pool on the windy nights.
Dont want to use stones as a mulch or the large wood chips.
Would mushroom compost "matt" together better than normal mulch when wet to make it less prone to blowing away?
We are using soaker hoses for watering so the mulch wouldnt really get soaked other than after we first put it down and "hose it in".
Anyone got any ideas?

You should be able to ask them for a heavy mulch for windy areas.
I used jungle mulch for that reason and has been quite successful. Its a fairly dark, heavy mulch with larger bits of bark in it. You should have a look at it before you buy it!

Don't know what a heavy mulch is, but I have found that putting old bird netting over the mulch stops the black birds and chooks from being able to kick it around. This could be a solution if you dont find what you are after in the form of a mulch.

Jungle mulch would definitely blow away, don't think any of the mulches I've seen are "heavy" enough was hoping more for something that would matt together.

Perhaps the old pine bark mulch? They are generally fairly large chunks of pine bark, don't know where you would get it though, some places must still have it.

If that is still too light, you need to look at some wind break plantings perhaps because your plants won;t be too happy with raging winds..

I keep getting emails that I have to re-lodge or buy a load. Might have gone corporate. We get a lot of people cutting and chipping trees in town but they still dump it at the tip.

The old way to do it was to pay the delivery cost or offer a carton, that generally gets it a bit faster. Or just pay for 1 load and have a chat to the bloke, you will probably get it quicker after that..

And if you see tree loppers going to the dump, tell them about the service, they probably don;t know it exists....

Ended up getting mushroom compost for mulch.
When wetted down well it sort of cakes together so I'm hoping this will stop it blowing around.
Most of the winds have stopped this time of year now anyway.

Are they the strong easterlies your talking about oldute? Shocking winds they can be.... I had friends up in the hills and they would have a roaring easterly blowing a gale, then I'd drive back to my place near the coast and there would be a sea breeze coming from the opposite direction. :dunno:

yeh mate, shocking wind. usually at night though. Blows gutters of the house, chairs off the verandah. But it can be calm 5km away.

how did that mushroom compost work out for you?

I need to mulch around my AP system. Currently have some wood chips around it that keep blowing into the pond and clogging up the pump...

You don;t want mushroom compost for where you walk, sticks to your shoes like the proverbial.. Can you get chipped tree prunings? I reckon that stuff is great..
