Right, I have a Compost Bin, I know little about composting and have just been throwing scraps in thee with a bit of dirt.

Now, I threw Meat in there, then someone said you shouldnt put meat in a compost bin but couldnt explain why?

So Why? And should I be running out there to get it out?

It was a Steak and a Chicken Frame.

Hi all
Haven't logged on for a while...have been busy with work and assignments for my course.
Anyway, about making compost:
Any organic matter, if left long enough will eventually rot to form compost, but meat attracts vermin and can make the compost smell, which is why it is not recommended. The main factor in producing a good compost is to get a good carbon/nitrogen ratio. Items high in carbon are things like sawdust, shredded paper, straw & autumn leaves, and those high in nitrogen are your lawn clippings, vegie wastes & weeds. It's best to put these items on in layers and adding a light layer of blood and bone helps as an activator. The material should be damp but not too wet and it should have an earthy smell. If the compost is dry & dusty add some water but also keep it aerated by turning it regularly. Some bought compost bins can be improved by inserting some PVC pipe with holes in it into the centre.
Hope this helps

Mitch would probably think it uncouth to do such a thing, forunately I have far less scruples when it comes to these things.
