Our new place has no fences, which is no problem for us but due to the new pooch the missus bought Im looking into fencing options to he cant escape. Options are bloody endless. I could fence part of the yard or go the whole hog and do the entire perimeter but that could be quite costly and then that involves neighbours etc too. I like the look of a timber post and rail fences to try and keep the country feel about the place but I was wondering if any of you might have any ideas or options that could work. If I fence of part of the yard I dont want it to take on a suburban look so maybe we could grow passionfruit or climbing plants along them or shape it through the yard so it looks more apealing. The biggest bug for me about this is we are finally going to have a massive back yard and I dont feel like running a fence through it. Other option could be one of those dog shock boundary collars but Im not sure about things like that. Any idea's |

My dogs can easily jump a 5 foot fence and like you I didn't want a massive head high fence around the house, I tried shock collars but if they wanted out bad enough they just let them shock them and jump the fence, might work on less pain tolerant breeds but not a Bullarab. In the end I just trained them to stay with in a specific area of the block which they are not allowed to leave with out permission, our gate is wide open every day and when I come home they are always just sitting in my shed at the border of their area looking down the driveway at the open gate 100m away. What bread of dog is it? Training will only work on intelligent breeds and sterilised males, I would give up hope if it is a beagle, blood hound or husky though. |

Thanks Simo, yea unfortunately not a very training worthy dog, its a pug crossed cavalier. Its still only a puppy so its pain in the butt most of the time but the kids love it. So training is out the window. It will help when I actually get there and spend some time on the property to figure out the best way to go then visit some fencing places too. |

Well, post and rail is expensive but it does look nice and has a very rural feel and if you are only doing an area around the house the cost could be kept low. Being a small dog you could use diamond or cyclone chain link fencing wire on the inside if the post and rail and it wouldn't look like a concentration camp. Like this.
