Hey all.

Just trying to work out if my idea will work.

I've done a plan of my veggie patch and want all your thoughts.

The wall on my shed is North facing so the long planter box will go along that wall.

In the 6.5m planter my plan is to put a couple of Citrus plants espalier in the corners and in the centre build a frame to have passion fruit climb and cover the wall.

The perpendicular boxes will be for veggies etc.

The raised beds will be constructed with 200 x 50 sleepers 2 high so that they will be 400mm deep.

So my question is, if I don't use weedmat or Geofabric or similar in the fruit tree beds, will the roots invade and suck the moisture out of the veggie beds?

If I had to use the Geofabric, would putting it 1/3 the way in the 6.5m planter under each citrus and 1/3 the way in the two end planters help? I just still want worm to be able to still come up through the soil.

Also is 700mm wide enough for the citrus?

Passionfruit roots are very invasive especially grafted varieties like Nelly Kelly, avoid these and go for the Panama varieties. Citrus roots will also invade and citrus hate having their roots disturbed so digging up your spuds might end up introducing disease to the citrus, stressing it out or even killing it.

Maybe a vertical geofabric or solid wall to direct the roots away from the veg beds would be best.

Better yet use black builders plastic to make the veg beds wicking beds so you keep all the water and nutrients in and the roots out.[SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH]

This is an update on my veggie patch.

For some reason I just can't get the citrus to take off. The two in the pots were in the planter beds but I pulled them out because their leaves started to curl and drop off. Now it pots they are booming but the ones in that bed just aren't working. I have no idea why.

Was thinking of pulling them too and trying again but it's getting expensive to do that?

I ended up lining the beds thatthe citrus are in with weed mat.

Any thoughts on how to get these citrus to grow?

You can successfully grow citrus in large pots so the lined grow bed shouldn't be a problem. What differences are there in the grow bed soil and the pot soil?

Maybe try a citrus fertilizer in the grow bed soil.

Well the ones in the grow bed are in the same soils but were just taken out of the pot and put in so they have potting mix around their root ball but they were doing alright in the pot.

I'm stumped I'm thinking of pulling them up putting them in pots and seeing what happens
