Post subject:  Recycling website.

Hi Yall.
Well I have just been on the BYAP forum and suggested that it is a shame we dont recycle more stuff.
When reserching for materials for my house extension I happened across this cool website from the USA. It was basically a site where companies would log and detail material that could be recycled. Everything from saw dust to paper to barrels, you name it.
I presume people would check out the website and if they needed or could use the material a conection was made and the material would be recycled.
What do people think of this idea? Do you think it could be used in Australia? How about a not for profit orginisation facilitating this service. Ultimately the material could be assembled and utilised by people on low incomes or even in less fortunate parts of the world than us.
I would be keen to here peoples ideas and ways to make it work.
Or does anyone know of such an orginisation already operating in Aus.
Ps I am not doing this as a market reserch or business idea, just wanting to be green.

There are certainly places around that do that Skipd. There is a recycling plant at Tamala Park near Quins Rocks, lots of stuff. We made good use of it in the early days here. One persons trash is another ones treasure.
There was a place near Armadale called Junkbusters- they recycled lots of good stuff.
Of course I always love verge trading :joy:

I had a look at Junkbusters and Tamala park on the internet.
Junkbusters sounds like a good idea but I couldnt see any log of the stuff they have.
I think for people to really utilise recycled equipment it needs to be logged and published online.
People need to acces this sort of info easily and accuratly for it to really work.
I guess I need to do a bit more homework and go and visit these places to see exactly what they offer.
Hey F&F, great to see you recycling.
My trip through a new housing area on the weekend just drove home to me how wasteful our building process is. All that waste. I know that no one offers a service that is cheaper than sending it to landfill, otherwise the builders would be doing it. The other thing is that people generally dont use recycled materials in the building process as there is not the volume of materials available to use and by the time you get it to a usable state the labour costs dictates that your better buying new in the first place.
The only time the extreme waste sent to landfill and lack of recycling building material rubbish will be when it becomes to expensive to send it to landfill or there is a cheaper alternative.
The chance of this happening in Perth is slim as the Government or tip owners will just make the tips bigger and bigger as land is so plentiful here.
So there are quite a few issues.

Keeping a current log of what goes through those places would be near on impossible, you need to visit them just to see the turnover of stuff that comes in and what goes out. Someone could not keep up even if they were working on it full time. Their wages would have to be paid and that would increase the end costs. Another place is Brakovich salvage, acres and acres of goods from demolished homes, need to take your tape measure and trailer. Doors, windoes and frames, sinks, bricks and tiles, an endless site.

 Speak to some home building site supervisors, some are happy for you to pick up the left over cement and bricks at the end of a job :thumb:

I guess what I am thinking of is more of a website that people would register their left overs and recyclable products on.
This way it would not be up to one person to do all of the logging. There would not really even need to be a depot as such.
Example, Builder registers on the website that they have 200 sheets of colourbond sheets at such and such site. Materials will be available for collection for the next 2 months.
Next enrty may be Acme manufactures regularly have 20 sheets of plywood from packing boxes for collection from their premisis.
Project builder may register that they regularly have a cardboard from packaging that can be picked up for recycling.
This way it would not be up to one person but more a website where people can unload their unwanted goods and material that they would otherwise have to pay someone to dispose of.
If enough people use the site then there would be a critical mass of goods that people would be able to collect enough of the same material for a project or to make into something else.
As the goods are collected it would then be a matter a deregistering the materials on the website.
The website could be sponsered by business's who would have their name displayed on the site for advertising. :)
