Reakly ? I've never even see pepino for sale - that's why I bought the plants to grow my own.

Not exactly supermarket, but has anyone bought mushroom compost in bags and managed to harvest mushies from them? Recently I dug some into a bed and 2 or 3 mushrooms came up (they look like Swiss Browns). There was the mycelium in the bag that was very obvious.

A nursery years ago told me it was spent. But if I cut open a bag and added more pig manure (?) would there be a good chance of a crop? The kits sold at nurseries and hardware shops are quite expensive compared to a 30l bag of compost.

Whadyarekon?

You would think there would still be some spores in the manure that would be viable and if kept under the right conditions would produce mushrooms growing off the remaining nutrient. Probably just not productive enough for the commercial growers.

Do an experiment Stretch and let us know how it goes.

Not sure if they heat mushroom compost up to stop it form producing. Otherwise there is a risk of people eating any mushrooms that comes up after adding a bag to the garden.

We have gotten Mushie compost from a mushroom farm in Townsville several times before and normally get another week or two of harvesting off them before actually putting it in the garden as compost, I think that they turn off the bags when the yeild starts to taper off and they just bring fresher bags into production.ometimes you even get a feed the same day as there is still some unharvested on the bags :) yum yum yum yumyuy yum

Nice connection to have Axl !

Can't see why it wouldn't work Stretch - probably just depends how hot the mulch got before you got to it. They don't have mushroom mulch in the wild and yet they seem to come up every year - as long as they have a food source!

Let us know how it goes :thumb:

Cool, I will get a couple of bags and see what happens.

I started to research this on the net and wanted to find out the price of a kit from a major hardware shop. The first site I came actually had a page on this http://green-change.com/2009/01/17/grow ... m-compost/ though they used fresh compost from a farm. I found another site that is a mail order site that charges $25-26 for a kit ( though most of their produce is not sent to WA :anger: ) They reckon a crop of 2-3kg over 6 weeks. Not sure if that would be viable really. Strangely a mob in Brisbane will post to us. They have Oyster & Shitake kits. Not sure on the policy of posting sites like this here but if allowed http://mycitygarden.com.au/category/mushroom-kits/ if not could the admin please delete.

We have a mushie farm here in Narrogin. They grow gourmet mushies (Oyster/Shitake and others). I phoned today to see if they sell to the public but was told I have to go to Freo's E Shed to buy them. They also don't sell the compost.

Yep, posting links to other sites on here is no problem at all....

My brother down in Denmark got a huge crop of mushies from mushroom compost he put on the garden, here in Perth I have never got anything from mushroom compost, I reckon most places sterilize it so that you don't get anything out of it.....

I did open the box and follow the instructions. I haven't looked back in the box in a while tho. Was going to get a few mushrooms from the supermarket and see if there was any spores left.

We have a mushie farm here in Narrogin.

Stretchman, can you PM me details about the farm near you? I may do a story on mushroom farming for Small Farms. Is it big business? In which case not really suitable. On the other hand, if it's a small enterprise it might suit.
