Hello, here's some up and coming fun.... Attachment: P2190410 (Medium).JPG [ 87.21 KiB | Viewed 19087 times ] The three round ones are mine, I'm going to use them at the font of my place spread amongst the lawn and newly planted fruit trees. One bed will have 3 bananas with some smaller herbs and sweet potato, another one will have 3 paw paws + low stuff, and the third one is undecided at the moment.. The big beds are Fayes..... She is going to have fun there....

I've got 3 of those round ones too. Was thinking of turning them into wicking beds shortly. |

Hi Faye do yourself and all the other members on both forums a favor and make one a wicking bed In one line the bottom and up the sides with pond liner 1/3 high then test with water to check for leaks Use the same mix in both [soil mulch potting mix whatever ] And a large hand full of composting worms in both Only different in one a 90 mm pipe along the bottom then an elbow and a riser 90 mm [get eddie to slot the bottom with an angle grinder ] cover the pipe only with scoria 20 mm gravel even hydrotron then a few layers of shade cloth weed mat ect The shade cloth scoria should only be on the center 1/3 rd The soil must touch the bottom at the sides Treat both beds as dirt beds watering fertelising mulching Just treat them the same and you will be supprised at how much less water and how much better the wicking bed is I have 6 running now and 3 more framed out If you need photos email me wickingly yours F&f |

Have you tried a couple lengths of PVC in the bottom with end caps and some holes. More water can be held and less gravel used in the base. |

F&F - how do you know when you have to add more water. Is it just judgement based on the soil being dry? |

Look down the PVC and if you can't see water its time to fill again. |

That post just helped me know what to do - thanks. What stops the bed from becoming full of water in heavy rain, ie where can the excess drain? I'm thinking of my situation with the round beds with plastic in the bottom third. From what I can see any excess can only drain between the walls of the tank and the plastic which could be quite slow. |

Drill a couple of holes above the plastic line once you decide its holding enough water. |

I have been thinking about the wicking beds after recently going through your thread and making notes, you have inspired me. I am still at the planning in my head stage. Filling those beds could be a big job I reckon. |
