I have been growing herbs and chillis in cut off sand filters from pools for a few seasons now pretty successfully. I drill a drain hole around 150mm up from the base so they act as a wicking bed, no pipework or anything and it seems to work fine. These sit on a limstone wall on the way to my workshop and are not the tidiest or most space effient things.
Today I scored a double concrete laundry trough (a really cool one with "The Digger" moulded into the front) from roadside pickup and this seems like it would be a much better use of space along a wall and it would look better - I just need three more now to fill the wall
I will add some backing blocks to the wall so I can slide the trough back a bit from what is in the pic so there is not so much front overhang and all of the base is supported to remove the possibility of it toppling.Has anyone else mucked around with growing stuff in these before? I am wondering if I should seal or line them first to help protect them as I know old concrete does not like constant moisture?
I am also considering putting a riser in the bottom drains to make them work like a wicking pots, has anyone done this successfully with a bath tub or similar before?
