Bit of a update as not much happening in the garden. We had some heavy rain this year and the last storm saw areas flooding which have never flooded before. A lot of new subdivisions are going in down the bottom of the range and this creates problems when we have heavy rain.

The creek at the bottom of my place was the highest I have ever seen it but no problems for us.

The new chooks have settled in well and all four are laying around 20 eggs a week. The wicking beds at the front of the house are still giving me problems but have a friend coming tomorrow so will talk it over with her. Something is still not right with the soil as the plants do not want to grow. Will be cleaning them both out this week and will dig over the soil and test it.

Harvested the ginger this afternoon and scored 2.8 kilos from the half barrel. So pickling ginger this week is also on the cards.

Have been building myself an aquarium in the back room, not your usual aquarium as I am a firm believer of grow it, eat it. Will post more shortly. Cheers

How do you know when to harvest
Im a bit further north than you and my one still seems to be growing?

Mine were overcrowded so I took them out. Ginger has a 26 week growing period and the leaves start to die back during winter then you normally harvest.

Last year I planted 5 pieces and I think I got just over 3 kilos but this year I planted 9 pieces and was too much for the barrel. So you should have another month of growth just keep any root which surfaces covered with soil or mulch. Cheers

Its my first successful batch
Ive had it growing before but the bush turkey got it
This one is raised beds away from the turkey.
I like the barrel idea and might give that a go next year to free up some bed space for other crops.

Ended up with 13 jars of various sizes, like the small jars best as it stretches the product out further.

Give them 3 months and they will be ready, well maybe 6 weeks and a trial run. Cheers

Been a long time and just letting you know we have sold our Peachester property and moved to Adelaide. Still unpacking and culling as we have no room here after I build my shed and fire pit for a garden.

Herbs will be grown in pots and no room at this point for a vegie garden or chooks.
