My wife has decided it is time for me to build her a bunch of raised beds for her growing interest in cut flowers. I'm happy to help her get started with this gardening task but I'm sure I'll be the one taking care of everything while she enjoys just the harvesting of the pretty flowers.
A little history for the readers.
I've been farming ornamental flowers and vegetables for 20+ years. Some years it was more vegetables than flowers but overall, a long time of farming in a number of different climates and soil conditions.
Our current homestead is in a subdivision with about 30 houses on the single street. The lot is around 1 acre in size but a 1/4 of it is wooded and won't be used. We have a swimming pool that will be the centerpiece for most of the cut flower beds and activity. Currently, I'm building four 4'x7'x .6" raised beds, three 2'x7'x10" raised beds, two 4'x12'x10" raised beds and a very long (2'x50'x8") raised bed.
The four 6"high raised beds will hold a majority of the day lilies which she will sell individually at the farmer's market. The daylily beds will not be ready to divide the plants until 2016.
The two 4'x12'x10" beds will hold a large variety of sunflowers. The rest of the beds will have a large variety of cut flowers.
She plans on selling these flowers at the local farmer's market as bouquets.
I'm planning on adding an irrigation system for all of the flower beds that will run on a timer. These will be long term beds so it's better in my opinion to add the irrigation before the plants are put in since most cut flowers don't like to get their heads wet.
I'll post some pictures as the beds are built and start growing out next Spring.
