Been dragging my feet getting this thread started on our block simply because we didn't have much to show yet in relation to backyard farming other than some established fruit and nut trees. But finally starting to get some stuff going so here marks the start of our move towards sustainable living. We have a long way to go but extremely excited on what we can develop on our small semi-rural property. Approx 6000sq block. We are in northern NSW, or the northern rivers as the locals call it. North of Lismore and inland from Byron Bay. Its a quiet little town nestled amongst the largest macadamia farming areas of Australia. In the local area other than macca's are banana, tea, coffee, nectarine and other assorted farming situated along a long country ridge. The previous one owners of our place told us that originally our place was a banana farm although I can't see any remittance of that. The previous owners were avid gardeners back in the 80's and won some local gardening competitions which they gave us newspaper clipping of. There were a few photos that just simply boggled us, it has changed a lot since back then as they let it run down as they grew older. Apparently there were over 700 varieties of native plants and trees, a lot are still here but simply just run down. There was a running stream with ponds and bridges with a path made with mondo grass circulated through the yard, Id imagine it was quite beautiful once upon a time. Not that it isn't now but its glory days are long gone. But we are here to resurrect it and hopefully do justice. Ok, so already gracing the property is a macadamia tree (not very healthy), apple tree (also not healthy), mandarin (doing well), lemon (very bitter), orange (very nice), mango (yumm) and coffee trees (fun but big work to process). Not really understanding tree pruning all that well I decided to prune the macca's lower branches to see what might come of it as it produces only a handful of nuts the previous summer. This summer we have new growth and there also seems to be more nuts so Im thinking of really hacking it back next season (any input welcomed) Attachment: DSC_0456.JPG [ 220.3 KiB | Viewed 35266 times ] Attachment: DSC_0380.JPG [ 205.93 KiB | Viewed 35266 times ] |

The apple tree after pruning (which was dead last year), has made a come back, even e few little apples. This one may take some time to fully recover.
