Can anyone identify this old pump I found down the back? Its a southern cross but I can't find anything on the net about what type of pump it is or what it would be used for. Id be interested to know how old it might be.

Dad thinks it may be some kind of old bore transfer pump. There is some piping down there too but everything is overgrown so I need to do some earthworks to see what I find.

Well you might ask some of your irrigation suppliers. Look for old people there, young people tend to know nothing if there is no chip on it.
You might also find information from farmers, but as your are in Kalgoorlie you might have to find cattle farmers or drive a lot :-)

Its an Australian thing, we abreviate everything. Perp is short for Perpetuitas. :)

Did you find out anything about it? Is that wooden stake a hand operated lever? If so it looks like a hand operated plunger or diaphram type pump, maybe used for priming larger pumps?

Either way, anything "Southern Cross" is highly collectable so don't ditch it.

I found a picture of one the same but no info. Pull it apart and rebuild it you might find a model number. Have you got kids? If so set it up to pump into your chicken waterer or the dogs bowl, kids love lever pumps.

Ran into the previous owner of our place yesterday, they built the house before the subdivision went in 30 years ago. Anyways, he said that originally there was a large dam down the back that the old timers used for the banana plantation across the road and that was a pump used to transfer water to a holding pond in our yard. He said if I pulled the pump apart it would be full of brass but I didn't get what he meant by that. Pretty interesting.

He had a few cool stories of the area so we swapped email and he's going to forward me some photos.

These pumps are cast iron construction with a brass bore and also they have brass valves and valve seats
Also the seal on the rod is usually brass
I had a collection of these years ago[20 different ones ]
When I was a kid there was an old feller [frans botcher ] that had a small market garden and had one on a well and he used to run all the water in channels
Us kids used to visit just so we could work the pump and always went home with a bag of veg
Ah memories
