Has anyone played with one of these pellet stoves. I've read that you can run them on grain. Feed wheat is free if you want to clean out a few trucks. Not sure if wheat would have a low enough moisture content. And a hammer press will make pellets out of a lot of waste eg cardboard boxes. |

Never heard of them, do you have any links to suppliers ect? Also hammer presses, I reckon one of these would be real handy to have, could make combustable bricks out of alot of different wastes like cardboard and sawdust that are readily available. Do they only make small pellets? I would like something that makes larger logs like the ones you can buy, they would allow more airspace and as such give you a nice hot clean burn. |

I had a look at a you tube video of someone turning grass clippings into fuel pellets with a hammer press. But I think that also involves mowing the lawn before hand. |

Seen pellet stoves when I was in Maine USA last year....they run really well and are quite efficient, and yep grain works well in them. Most have a battery backup to keep the auger and fan going during blackouts. |

Thinking about making a thermal mass heater. Instead of using a fan to help burn the pellets I thought a funnel would force the air to a central point. And the pellets can be just dropped into the funnel.

They also call them rocket heaters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jzKKIHh ... re=related The idea is to make a similar brick one like the video. This is built outside in a green house. The pipes go under the house or into a brick room. The air can be pumped into the house or the piped under the house. Having the unit in a greenhouse(or shed) will also heat it through the winter. Other ideas are running pipes in the soil under fish tanks etc. |

At work so can't utube  but it reminds me of the old underfloor heating the romans used (back when they were nailing public speakers to trees) ... very simple idea that worked well

It might end up heating the shed, greenhouse, house, fish tank. A few extra pipes and I might get the hot tub warm as well. |

Hi, We used to have a pellet stove before we moved. We loved it. All we could burn in ours was the wood pellets, cherry pits and corn. The pits burned pretty fast compared to the pellets and we never tried the corn. All winter long and all we had in ash was a 3 lb size coffee can 3/4 full. (that is about a #10 can) Our winters ran from about November to March. Our pellets came in 40 lb bags and was a lot easier to handle than a cord of wood. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I would recommend one to anyone. Cindy |
