Does anyone have any good traditional ginger beer recipes using a ginger plant? I have found a few online but they all use ground ginger. I would like to find one that uses fresh ginger if possible. |

OK so when all else fails, phone your mum right?.............. well I did and she has lost our old family recipe but did a few searches and said that this one is exactly the same as the plant her and dad use to use, however they never added yeast, just used sultanas, they also use to cover the jar with cloth. As a kid I can remember that there was always a plant slowly bubbling away in a jar on the kitchen windowsill leading up to summer. I can also remember the mess that a few dozen of these brews bottled into king browns make when one explodes and sets off a chain reaction in the storeroom Going to set me up a plant this week http://www.ourfamilyprojects.com/Comfortable_Hippies/2008-06-01_Homemade_Ginger_Beer_Recipe.html |

Hi burnsy, i just use the traditional receipe and substitute grated/crushed ginger instead of the powdered stuff. Just be aware that the flavour of your ginger beer will be milder. |

Thanks all, I have adapted a few recipes and created a plant today so I will keep you posted on how it goes. I used: 2tsp ginger powder 2tsp raw sugar 6 sultanas 2tbs of lemon juice 300ml of water Combined in a jar and covered with cotton cloth. According to my mum it needs to be left 7 days as is before I start feeding it with a tsp of ginger and a tsp of sugar each day as using only sultanas takes longer to activate than using yeast to start it. After bottling it a nd splitting the plant I plan to maintain both plants but feed one with sugar and the other with honey to see if I can make a ginger beer with a honey flavour. |

I've got a kit somewhere. Remember when we used to make it as kids. Brother still has the scar from the glass exploding. |
