Introducing another tough plant that's a must have in my garden. These things are almost indestructable - the first photo shows my large tree which as had a deep trench dug right next to it and has had various sorts of building rubble and I think brickies sand thrown all over it. All of which has happened in the last few months. And it hasn't had any water since it last rained a few months back. The Curry Tree (Murraya koenigii), so named because it's aroma is reminiscent of a curry, not because curry powder is made from it's leaves. The leaves are an ingredient in many Indian and SE Asian dishes. You can put in a whole "branch" of leaves and then take it out at serving time or the individual leaves are cooked in the dish and eaten as part of the dish. If you come across one, grab some leaves, roll them in your hands a couple of times and then smell your hands - beautiful aroma.

I've got a small one in the backyard. When I slash the grass I'll have to keep a look out for it. |

Damn that tree is huge.... I just bought one that has a stem as thick as a pen, probably 2 feet tall, and a couple of spindly branches with a few small leaves, cost me over $40. They had one other plant in a large pot that was about 1/5 the size of yours or smaller and it was about $250. |

Bummer Joel - we have a couple coming up around the stem of this one. I wouldn't have charged you a cent over $30 |

Oh well... Do you know if they grow from seed? I have a lot of what I guess must be green seed pods on my plants. |

Apparently they will grow from seed, but it's very hard to do. A friend of the MIL grew some every year for a few years I am told. Doesn't do it now. We tried for a couple of years and got bugger all. If there's some special technique I am unaware of what it is. Not even sure if the young ones around the tree came from the seeds that fall there, or from shoots from the tree itself. I'll dig around sometime and see if it's attached or not. Yep, they are seed pods on the tree. They will eventually turn a dark purple. I'll save you an adventure and tell you now - don't eat them - they taste terrible. |

They do grow from seed, and they are considered a weed in some parts I think. Birds eat and deposit the seeds far and wide. Keep a look out for seedlings sprouting under the tree and transplant them when 15cm or so. Keep moist in a warm spot for the first year then they will happily grow pretty much anywhere. Now I know how much they are worth I won't be giving them away! |

Wow a plant that uses animals to help reproduce. Bit like every other plant in my garden. And they are worried about it sending up suckers. Must never have grown native trees. I ringbarked a native tree in the back yard and poured roundup into the wound. 3 years now and its still alive. The bark grew back over the cut and I've had to re-cut it. |

We're going to let them grow to fill that whole space up there as not sure what the hell else to do with it, and the curry trees seem happy there. |
