Post subject:  Sichuan Pepper
I purchased a Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) plant from Diggers a little while ago and am highly intrigued to see how it goes. I use a the spice a reasonable amount and it is a must if I'm doing crispy skinned duck.

It's only been in the ground for about a months but has put on a little new growth in that time.

Curious to know if anybody else is growing this and was it successful ?

Looks interesting from the wikipedia info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sichuan_pepper

Is anyone growing the Australian native pepper "Tasmannia lanceolata". I'm keen to try and grow this.

Thought the below was an interesting factoid given most of us here have an interest in aquaponics/aquaculture as well ...

The compound also has powerful piscicidal (fish poisoning) effects - Water Pepper, (which also contains polygodial), has been used by Nepalese fish farmers to remove feral fish from their ponds before restocking, since it is rapidly degraded after having the desired effect.

It's been looking unwell for the last couple of weeks, but finally died earlier in the week :cry:

What killed it. Do you have any native trees near by. They tend to drop sap to get rid of the competition.

Yeah, it's pretty close to and Ironbark gum that I had intended to let it climb all over.

Maybe that's why the yacon is not really doing much, other than survive. Mmmmmm...

CD, it looks awfully like a 'pink pepper' tree we have on our farm (with river red gums all around). It suckers like crazy and can hardly be kept under control. I'm constantly trying to get rid of its 'daughters'. If it is the same one, I would say you've had a lucky escape. I'd buy my pepper over the counter rather than have our one again.

Yeah GS, had the thought that the leaves looked similar when I first got it as well, but looked into it and it was definitely a vine.

I'm familiar with the pepper trees as well - certainly obligatory on every farm in South Australia and even bouncing around the WA goldfields, whenever I came across the ruins of an old house, there was almost certainly a pepper tree nearby.
