Just found this post about fungi, so thought I'd add a couple of pictures that i have already put in my own "member's" section, but they belong here too. Yeah - I used to have a picture of one in some book I had when I was a kid and never thought they were real - thanks for the pic orcy no worries. i did look up the name at one stage, but cant remember it now. they seem to be all over Brisbane, anwhere where there is a deep layer of mulch, and they come up after a few days of rainy, wet weather. They rely on ants and flys to spread the spawn, as such, you can probably imagine what the brown stuff on the red one smells like |

So does anyone grow any at home? I gave pink oyster and italian oyster mushrooms a go. both were from spore print (so the very hard way) nothing came from from pink oyster but the italian oyster went great guns! Did multiple runs; on waste paper in a bag straw in a polystyrene box straw in a cardboard box They are very "meaty" in consistany. pan fried worked well. Mum chucked one of the spent straw ones in the compost and then when she used that compost she had them popping up everywhere! ended up running them over with the lawn mower lol! Although spore prints are a PITA to get to a grain spawn stage without contamination they are fantastic way to store and swap different species. |

Wow, that is interesting. I found some of the edible type in the garden the other day, started me thinking that I should add some shop stock from the Spud shed and see if I can increase the production. |
