Post subject:  White button Kits
Been thinking about getting a Button mushroom kit, was just wondering if i was to get a kit or two then a few bags of Mushroom compost, weather it would expand the growth??

Also would adding some Cow Manure too it all be an advantage... iv got an old fridge that i was thinking bout growing them in.

Somone told me that they steralise mushroom compost to stop them growing in it... weather it be cos they may be a neucence or they dont want anyone getting free shrooms :P

The Local Sand/soil has some down there and theres small shrooms growing everywhere in it, so im thinking this stuff would be active still.....

any advice on this would be awesome :cheers:

wild spores are just that, and you should take spore prints to be sure of what you are growing before eating them. if you don't know how to id. them i would stick to a kit.

I see on tv the other night they went into a pine forest and got mushrooms
How can you tell if they are ok to eat [ie toadstools or mushrooms]

they know what they pick, they take spore prints, they have been taught......never eat a musshie unless your sure!

the mushie farm up here sells off its compost bags every few weeks (you have to book in advance) and they normally have a few mushies still growing on them, and with a bit more watering, continue to produce for weeks afterwards :)

If they are growing in pine forests they are often ones to watch out for.. It's pretty famous here that at certain times of year police stake out the pine forests down bailingup way as people go mushy picking..

When I was a kid we used to go each year to pick wild mushrooms with the grandparents... I wouldnt be game to do it by myself now though as I wouldnt be able to tell the difference... but loved it tho... a fond childhood memory :mrgreen:

I have never had one of those kits do what they are supposed too. I get a few mushies but they never get loaded.
But I have seen a guy on another garden forum who bought some mushroom compost in bags, and just split the bags open and put them in a shady spot in his garden and he got heaps of mushies. :dunno:

Well Im going to try a kit soon, will keep some logs n photos and weigh the output etc.... see if its worthwile etc

Don't know how true it is, but it was explained to me years ago that a mushroom will peel at the edge of the cap, the whole top skin will come off and a toadstool won't.

Certainly true of wild mushies in WA, also they will have the little skirt on the stem where the top has ripped away from it when it opens up. Ths might not be the case in other places as there could be other no edibles that mimic these two characteristics. Have always picked and eaten wild mushrooms across the wheatbelt and Darling Range in WA since I was a little tacker.
