I do not believe that red daccas are a permited variety in Qld for home gardeners to grow (ie even with a permit). I know many scough at government restrictions on the movement of fruit, vegetables, seeds etc, however many of these rules are developed in order to protect an industry that is at threat of spread of disease and I think this is something that warrants serious consideration.

I had a look before VB and I couldn't see the list of permitted varieties. Might have a better look later on.

Permit sounds like a bad idea. They used the spread of disease as an excuse to get rid of a lot of varieties of bananas.

So Duff - what motivation do you think the Government would have had to get rid of banana varieties?

All seed producing bananas and anything that they don't have complete control over. Disease was also used to stop farmers from selling suckers(@ $1). Now you have to buy there varieties( @ $15).
The dept of Ag also brought in verticillium wilt(or Fusarium ) cos it was not on Australia list of disease at the time. They even monitored its spread around the country.

So motivation was money at the expense of genetic diversity. If they keep on this path it will only take a few variety specific disease to wipe out bananas for good.

The top grey bar of the forum page has a "Magazine Shop" but I can only see backyard aquaponics magazines in there, maybe the backyard farming magazines never took off.

Maybe Faye could enlighten us.
