Before anyone gets excited, I know it's not a fruit tree, but neither Vegetables or Herbs seemed any more valid, so here it is.

Called in and saw a mate a few weeks ago who's wife is from Laos and, to my mind, is a gardening legend. Amongst other things, she gave me a 1½ ft piece of sugar cane and the complex instructions of, "Stick it in the ground. Water it."

So I did.

I had masses of it at my place, grows pretty well in Perth, I just never really found much of a use for it. Mitch took some from my place a few weeks back and says that he's planted it and it's growing well..

I told him I don't believe him. (hint hint Mitch)

Yeah EB, it's mainly there for novelty value and the possibility of adding a little protection or support for the banana tree.

Need more piccies Mitch, or one of your great reference posts.

Most use it as a wind break. That would be good growing along fence lines instead of weeds.

Good idea Lee - may have to do some transplants in a couple of years when it's taking off, as ectra protection for the banana tree.

Sugarcane juice (landline)
Code:
PIP COURTNEY: Sugarcane juice isn't a new product by any means. In countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, and Brazil, street vendors sell it fresh.

It's renowned for being a thirst-quencher. Sonya Maley says all she has done is upscale and modernise a traditional favourite.

Nice one CD, mine have done squat sitting in my AP drain tube so I guess I will be planting them out into dirt this weekend - after I go and remove a swarm of bees from a compost bin for my second hive :joy:

As a side, I think it is just starting to come into the season for growth of cane and the ike here as my lemon grass that has spent the last six months as root nodes only has just sprouted over the last week.
