I just got 10 canes from a grower in Bindoon and got some fairly specific instructions.
Canes are about 50cm of last seasons growth.
Plant about a 3rd of the bottom part of the cane directly into ground in September.
As laterals begin to sprout cut directly through the bud node dierctly above the two laterals you want to keep.
Trim all growth below the prefered laterals except for one to be used as back up if one of the prefered branched fails (apparently you only want one branch one either side of the cane so one is trained left and one right.
Tie string from the laterals to the wire trellis to train them up to the wire.
Wait seven years and harvest
As far as soil goes I am planting into the same type of free draining gravelly loam (Dwellingup type II soil from memory) as the grower in Bindoon so they should be alright. Not sure how they would go in Perth sand but I would probably add composted cow poo to give it a kick along.
I am going to plant all 10 but only keep 5 and I will dig up the surplus and give away if any one is interested.
