Looks like I'm going to get a great crop of olives this year from my tree but I've noticed that almost all of the fruit is a bit lumpy, does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Bit dark to get a pic now, will try tomorrow.

Could be insect bites. Think some of mine have a rough surface.

Not really easy to see but you can notice them a bit, seems like most of the fruit are lumpy some more than others... I wonder whether perhaps its poor watering, I guess I came to this conclussion because they also seem to be a little soft, and on some fruit you can see small lump almost on ever spot over the skin surface.... :dunno:

Preserve them in jars for a snack or crush to extract the oil for cooking

All I could find was this:

look at the second picture of red scale on olive. I know it doesn't look like you have scale, but the olive in the picture is lumpy. To me it looks like they have been stung early in their growth. Do you have fruit fly under control?

what about the black olives? are they black or treated to turn black? i don't recon i ever seen a olive tree in the southern usa. i need to see if they could grow here.

These turn black when they ripen on the tree. I would think southern USA would be ideal for olives, you should definitely have some, a mix of eating olives and oil olives so that you can do both. Olives and olive oil are a great thing to sell at markets because they command top $ and they aren't very perishable.

Do I have fruit fly under control? Depends on what you mean under control.. I have them, and loads of them, lose most fruit crops to them but have never seen them in the olives, yet..

If you have loads of them I would say that is what it is. I had similar looking olives at my last place and they turned out ok. I have a batch sitting in a salt brine solution that I haven't done anything with for almost 2 years now - so you would think that they are rotten however tried them late last year and they are good! A little salty but good.

BigW California has heaps of olives.

I have heard that most black olives that we buy in the shops are died black. There are 2 ways to treat olives before they can be eaten - with salt (slow and laborious{months}) and the other with caustic soda{hours}. However when I treated a batch of black olives with draino they turned white and their shelf life was quite short.

i looked online and i am i zone 7, so cold hearty or most being sold on ebay were good. what varites are good? say for fresh or canned? what about the oil, is the entire olive crushed or just the pits?.
gonna have to figure out what ya'll use as an oil press. that sounds costly

I believe you crush the whole fruit, an old paper press would work I guess, never done it myself but I think you soak the pulp in a large tub of water and all the oil floats to the surface, then you just have to figue out how to skim the oil off the top. might do an on-line search :learn:
