Who has grown passionfruit and had troubles with rootstock? Pretty much all the passionfruit you can buy in nurseries are grafted (except banana passionfruit) and for me they have been a real problem. Both myself and a good friend of mine have had rootstock plants pop up out of the ground 10-15 m away from where the main plant is. It can be hard to notice them when they are so far away from the plant and they grow very quickly... We both pulled our passionfruit out because of this problem, anyone else have the same problem? |

I have always grown Nellie Kelly grafted passionfruit and had prolific crops. We just pulled away the rootstock and try very hard not to disturb the ground at the base of the plant. I understand that the reason for the rootstock sending out shoots is that the root of the plant has been disturbed. |

Whoops - pre-empted you thread on the other on EB. Yep, I've always hated the buggers but Mrs Chilli insisted we have them and that she would take care of the runners - Ha ! Haven't seen it yet. I don't know about disturbed Faye - nothing happens near ours and they send runners out constantly. It may just have to mysteriously die one weekend

From my experience passionfruit send up runners when they are heavily watered away from the main trunk. I found that as soon as I removed the aerial sprinkler that was responsible and started hand watering, right at the base of the plant, almost all of the runners stopped popping up everywhere.

I have two that have been in for about a year and they don't see to be doing much, they are alive but have grown less than 100mm. Soil is gravel/loam with some clay, full sun, but just on the outskirts of the drip line of large eucalyptus trees What do you think?, poor soil?, alopathic chemicals from eucalyptus?, need more compost/chook poo? What soil conditions do they like pH etc.... |

Yes, I have the same problem. And I think glyphosate is their drink of choice. There is a type of passionfruit about that has giant fruit. It's called something like Sunshine Special. Does anyone know where they can be bought? Apparently they are one of those hybrids that can only be grown from cuttings as I've tried growing from seed of a fruit from the suipermarket and failed miserably. |

I grow my passionfruit from seed. THey are very sweet. Remind me to keep some for you guys. They are purple. Do not know the variety???? |

I have 2 passionfruit at the moment planted at the back of the chook pen. Have been there about a year and only recently started to take off as they ahve managed to find their way into the sun (mulberry and another tree had shaded them out - so they have climbed over to the other side of the chook pen and also up the mulberry). At least one of these is grafted (maybe both), so I must go and check for runners (had never heard of this problem before). Hell, I hope the whole bloody plant is not from the rootstock - which would stand to reason because I've had no fruit yet  .

Generally the leaf shape of the root stock is very different. Just like a rose rootstock has much narrower leaves, so does the rootstock of the passionfruit. |

Went and checked my passionfruit after reading this thread. I have tow, a yellow and a purple (forgotten the names right now). One might be panama (the purple I guess)??? Only the purple is a grafted and sure enough it had thrown a shoot from the rootstock. I've snapped it now so only time will tell how much of the vine that is on the chookpen and starting up the mulberry is from the rootstock. Good news is that on closer inspection of the yellow passionfruit bush, there are quite a few newly forming fruit and a couple of big ones also (just need to rippen). |

I've got 3 vines. Not sure what type, a kelly and a banana at least. One is growing into the vines on the back fence. And apparently there are tomatoes growing there as well. |

I'm on my 3rd passionfruit vine in as many years. First 2 died from rabbits. Third one grew fantastic but first time it had flowers was last winter. The fruit didnt ripen. I bought it from bunnings cant remember what kind it is but it hasnt had any flowers since last winter. I'm thinking I might have to pull it out because if it flowers in winter it mustnt be suited to our weather. You'd think it should be if it was sold locally. Any way of tricking it into flowering?? Should I wait a bit longer before I pull it out? |
