Simo, you asked about cherries. My cherry tree is still young (two years) and I have only had one cherry from it so far, but I grow it under the same conditions as citrus, apples, pears, stone fruit, etc. (Our temps range from about 2 to 42, so similar to Perth.) I made sure I bought a 'low chill' variety that doesn't need the usual frost to produce BUT, even so, each year in about August I put three bags of party ice around it and puncture the bags so that as the ice slowly melts it trickles down around the roots. Doing this a couple of times tricks the tree into thinking there has been a frost and helps it to set fruit (so I'm told). |

Trevor of the Garden Gurus had an article in todays Sunday Times Home liftout about how he grew cherries in the perth hills and ate them at xmas. He went on to talk all about his orchard and the edible plants he enjoys growing. |

I love cherries but we don't get a frost, I will definately be on the look out for a low chill variety to add to the orchard. |

I almost bought a cherry tree the other day. I assumed that it would be a low chill variety being sold at a reputable nursery in Perth. When I got to the counter the lady said, "now tell me your not living in the metro area, because that won't fruit in Perth." Not even in Jandakot she reckoned... Still, that's the advantage of buying some things from a good nursery. If I was buying from Bunnings no one would have said a thing and in 5 years time I would be cursing.. |

I would like to know which nursery you went to. Want to get a couple of fruit trees at some stage but it would obviously be best to go somewhere that they know what they are selling... |

I wish I could remember, but it was a couple of years ago. I have seen them in Waldecks and (I think) Dawsons. I tend not to go to Bunnings for anything bigger than a 10cm pot. |

Yep, I remember my Grandpa doing exactly the same thing over 30 years ago, and he lived in South Australia's mid-north - damn hot and dry and he had cherries every year. |

I got the trees at Dawsons in Forrestfield, they cost a bit more than some other places, but it's a nice nursery, worth going to just to walk around and look at the massive trees and palms. |

I got a self propagating variety and we get frosts, last year we had 4 cherries in first year, expecting heaps this year and a total of zero, but not many of our fruit trees flowered this year, we are thinking the low rainfall from jan-april may have something to do with it

They work the chill factor out by "the number of hours below a certain temperature". So although you might get a couple of cold spells, unless you get X hours under X degrees then they won't fruit. But as you say there are plenty of other factors. Not enough rain, no pollinators, etc... |
