Pomegranate

Does anybody still grow pomegranates ? Used to be, when I was a kid in Sth Australia that lot's of people had them and every farm certainly did.

My youngest daughter is obsessed with them for some reason that eludes me ....

Like many of my trees this season it seems to be confused as I have flowers on the tree as well as nearly mature fruit :crazy:

We mainly juice them as I've never really seen them used for much else, besides putting a few of the seeds in a drink to pretty it up for the girls.

I've got a couple of smaller plants in the back yard. Be a few years before they start fruiting I guess.

Maybe - this one has only been in for 2½ years though and we got fruit of it last year.

I pulled mine out a few months ago, it was against the water tank and was getting too big.
Full of thorns thats for sure.

I have some stupid flowering one that has fruit smaller than a golf ball...

The juice from them is great, I first had the juice in Egypt where it is very common. I've got myself a new tree to plant and boy they don;t mind charging for them... Cost me $50 and it almost died the first week I got it home...

Can't wait to have fruit like you have there CD... Do you have a "press" style juicer for doing them?

No - but the idea has been filed away in my head for a while - must act on it someday.

Only got an electric rotary one at the moment.

CD, I have seen Nigella use the seeds in a lamb dish (lamb pot-roasted until it falls from the bone and can be shredded). She cut/broke it in half and belted it with a wooden spoon to dislodge the seeds onto the shredded lamb.

I have two small pomegranate trees. One is growing from a pruning of the larger one - they seem to take very easily so I'm not sure why they are so expensive. But I have had no fruit yet. Can't wait.

This is the style they used at the juice places in Egypt. So simple, just pull out refrigerated pomegranates, cut them in half, pull the lever... Cold fresh Pomegranate juice..

Hmmm, it isn;t a simple thing to get the little segments out of a fruit, bit of an art I reckon to do it effectively.

Thanks GS - I'll look that one up - guess the pomegranate adds a certain tartness to contrast the fattyness from the meat. Also thanks for the imagery of Nigella - from the look of my To Do list this morning, it may be the highlight of my day :thumb:

EB - thanks - looks nice and simple, in fact it looks like an up-market, modified home-brew bottle capper, though I'm sure it cost more. There's a good shop here in the city called Cut It Out that may stock something like that so I may go an have a look and see what the price is like.

I've got a bush I brought at B a few years ago. Grows well, looks good, but this particular variety has a very dark red juice (dont get it on your clothes) and a very sour taste. The fruit I get from the inlaws has a pale colour and a very sweet taste.

Yeah.... I always wonder about naming of things, there could be two reasons.. Either because the name is what they were really like, or it's because someone wished it were like the name..

Like people that put "international" in the title of their business, or "corporation", or "global". Often these people are just hopeful of the fact... So, I will remain hopeful that the pomegranate is truly "wonderful".
