G'day Gang, We did a trip into Tass1 Nursery ( http://www.tass1trees.com.au/ ) today and picked up 14 mixed table grape vines for $100. They range from 50cm to 70cm tall. I think that is a pretty good deal They are going to provide shade in summer and let the sun through in winter around the house and shed Cheers Dennis |

I need to plant some more grape vines. Wish I had gotten around to it 5 years ago. |

My suggestion is to make sure you plan protection from the birds Curnow. It's great when they start fruiting, but not so fun to lose them all to the birds, unless your aim is to bring more birds to the garden. I did think about it Duff, I sort of think it is already too late now. On the positive side I see it as a photo opportunity |

I'm not too worried about the birds. I will bag bunches and leave some for the wild life. At the moment the wild life is getting all my cape gooseberries Cheers Dennis |

G'Day Simo, Not sure if this is the best time to plant out with these heat waves coming through I am going to keep them in the pots until they have dropped their leaves and then plant out into well prepared soil. The hot easterlies are knocking them around even in the pots so unless someone advises strongly that they should go in the ground now I will baby them till Autum. Cheers Dennis |

I planted a new grape vine. Seems to be handling the heat okay. |

Just harvested some beautiful sultana grapes today. Probably harvested a sixth of what the vines produced. Unfortunately the birds and chickens got the rest. Next year I'll be netting etc, to stop this.

Mitch, I have a vine with grapes very similar to your picture above - do you find that they are quite acidic or tart at the moment. If they are sultana grapes does that mean you dry them out? I keep trying them each week but they are not edible. |
