I planted a white sapote tree a few years ago out the back, it was fairly slow to get going and really scrawny, but over about 5-8 years it's come good and is now a reasonable size. At this time of year when the fruit are forming on the tree, it also drops a large percentage of it's leaves and re-shoots with new growth.

Very susceptible to scale and my tree always has a fair bit of scale on it, still, without any intervention it keep on growing and has started to put out a few fruit over the past couple of years. This year though it's fruit drop seems to excessive, I don't know whether this is normal and just because it has so many fruit on it, or whether it's not entirely happy. Here you can see how scrawny it looks at this time of year when it's dropping it's leaves.

Here's the fruit drop, there's lots all over the ground under the tree, along with the leaves.

But there's still a lot of fruit on the tree.

This year quite a few of my trees have lost excessive quantities of leaves, as well as dropping a lot of fruit. I imagine this is due to the very hot days we have had. Especially after last week I've noticed a lot of dropping fruit etc. However most of them have put on a second crop of fruit. Which is strange.

What do the fruit taste like Joel ? I've heard of them but never tried one !

Yeah Mitch, some of my citrus have new fruit coming on even though the normal crop is well on it's way. It looks like the avocado is gloing to flower again too ! Oddball season.

Hmmm, hard to say, soft sweet white flesh, a bit like a cross between a banana and rock melon, or something like that. Nothing I would rave over, but an ok fruit to eat.

Sure looks like a tree under stress to me.

I've heard that the weird spring we had (cool and then suddenly hot) has caused quite a few anomalies in fruiting.

yeah, fruit on the ground has tripled over the past couple of days. I think my tree was a little too ambitious when it set so many fruit.

Beautiful......

The Sapote tree has stopped dropping fruit, there a hell of a lot of fruit on the ground but not many more dropping, and the tree has resurected itself. From the horrible twiggy thing it was a couple of weeks ago, it's now a lush green healthy looking tree.

An unbelievable change in just a couple of weeks. Looking forward to having a few good fruit of it this year, just have to keep the damn rats at bay.

Yep - as noted elsewhere, such as the new growth on my avo, it's a weird season and plants are showing growth and flowers at times not usually seen

I've got a chocolate sapote in the ground 8 years ,just doesn't get enough TLC.
It has had flowers and small fruit the size of olives and then dropped them.
I need to get a 3rd tank in and get my grey water system sorted and startup a aquaponic system so I don't have to waste water watering vegies every second day.
It will happen but it wont be really quickly,it needs thousands of dollars.

Joel,
You tried putting a sapote in the AP system yet? I have one about the right size to try it out but would prefer not to kill it.

Na.... I haven't really done any trees in AP, apart from all the gum trees which popped up in our raft system... With something the size of the sapote I'd whack it in the ground...

That cocos island palm or whatever it is behind the sapote would be stealing most of the water and nutes from it .... they are real soil robbers .

In the right climate white sapotes are vigorous growers... I have to prune every year, with a chain saw.

I reckon the chocolate sapote is hardier but hate dry weather ... they are no relation, actually the chocolate sapote is a persimmon and the sapote is related to the citrus family
