As far as I know this is a grafted mandarin tree. Last year we had a great harvest from this tree but this year it seems to be in a spot of bother. The fruit is falling from the tree prematurely and the branches are laying over almost like its getting to heavy.

Any ideas?

Is the the first year you have dug around in and planted veggies at its base?

I know ctrus have a network of swallow roots around their drip line that do not like to be disturbed, if these have been damaged it could be that the tree cannot physically (can physically be used as an adverb when refering to a tree :dunno: ) absorb enough water to support the heavy fruit load even if the ground is moist enough.

Did you see a heap of roots when you dug the garden bed?

Mine is dropping fruit like mad about the same colour as those, they still seem pretty ripe so we are just eating them.

You may be right simo. We have always planted under the tree but its possible I did some damage when I did a crop of potato's as I got real agressive with my digging campain whereas Im usually quite light on.

On another note, looks like its been flogged by fruit fly as well.
