Does anyone have experience of planting two fruit trees in the same hole? I have done it twice with varied success. My two pear trees are growing well although one is doing better than the other. I have to be careful when pruning not to take too much off the smaller one. Although only three years old I've had a couple of pears form before the b.... parrots got them. :bat:

More recently I planted a pair of pistachios in the same hole but the female died. :cry:

I've since heard that two into one is now considered to be not a good idea.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a bad idea. Restricts the roots and they have to compete with each other. You may even have roots that join. Be okay if one of the trees is parasitic and needs the other to feed off. But an A & B of one type would be better off with a few mtrs of space. The bees will fly between them.

Now grafting to make one tree into two with a single root stock. I'm planing on playing with most of my trees when they get big enough so that they will have a mix of branches.

Is it very common ? I heard them recommend it the other arvo on the Garden Gurus and I just went :shock: - never heard of it before.

I can't see how it's a good idea, but willing to admit there may be something I'm missing.

It's been suggested by nursery people on gardening programmes for several years, but I recently heard (Sabrina Hahn, I think) that it is no longer recommended and I'm wondering why. Seems like the Garden Gurus still think its OK.

I think the basic idea is twofold. One is to cut down on space when it is limited and the other is to aid pollination.

When you think about it tomatoes are grafted with two root systems which must 'mingle', so I'm not concerned about crowding of roots and surely the bees will be more attracted to flowers close by than having to fly to find more.

I'll take a pic of my trees later so you can see that they don't appear to be suffering.

I forgot to prune my root graft and now I have 2 varieties of peach ,by accident but both eat well.
