That time of year again, just got a call from Erin and she nearly reversed over "a huge 10 metre long snake" (so it was probably a big dugite around 2-3 metres) on the front lawn that reared up at the car. It fled to the neighbours which does not give me to much confidence given that side of our yard is where all the crap is stored and the bottom of the fence is open.

No place for snakes that big in a front yard that has a 14 month old toddling around in it as far as I am concerned. The hunt will be on the afternoon when I get home :bat:

Did I tell you how we accidentally trapped a couple in the bird net that covered our fruit trees. They get through and the net does not allow them to continue, they tangle and damage themselves, if you find them early they will still be alove. If you don't go there all there often the smell is a dead give away.
I have heard that they travel the same route, perhaps to get to a pond that has frogs as a food source and for a drink. They do also inhabit chicken pens looking for eggs, our neighbour has a 6ft inhabitant that winds its way in and out on a regular basis, they leave it and come back for the eggs later, it makes me go weak at the knees as it slithers along the fence. It gave me a fright when I was in my own little world and then suddenly noticed it, I said to myself, step away, step away, as I held my heart from beating outside of my chest.
But really they are as scared of us as we are of them - mutual respect.
I saw the first one of the season a week or so ago, as I was bravely mowing on the ride-on mower, it snuck under a blackboy, out of my way, and up near the fig tree where a large one had died years before.

So, did anyone actually try out these snake deterrent products after all this time?

I noticed that the pet shop near me in Newy has them for around $65.00 each.

My old work intranet had a few posts on this subject where a few people that said it worked and a few that said it didn't. Around 50/50 from a nationwide source however, there are many, many variables such as topography, climate, correct installation, product description vs performance expectations etc.

Not much help I know but when I move to a rural block I will gladly invest in this type of product even if the possibility of success is all in my head as that is where my irrational fear for snakes also resides.

Cheers and beers
