I thought this might be a really good place to share pictures of bugs.
I'll get the show on the road and you can all join in with your fantastic bug shots. :D

I have probably found four different colonies of these bugs in the last week, all have been on tomato plants. The eggs were beautifully laid on the underside of the leaf and only found after they had started to hatch. Stay tuned as I have a series of photos.

Well actually, those bugs surpised me and were then found to be shield bugs at the next stage when they did another moult. :learn:
I would say bad bugs chillidude as they are sap suckers and so many of them on tomatoes is not good, other than for the purpose of research and photographic purposes.
Can you get photographer smilies? :?:

Can anyone tell me whether these flies/wasps are friend or foe? :dunno:

They overnight in clusters on the tenderest shoots of various plants, eg citrus, natives, hazelnuts, etc, weighing the tip down. If they're sap-suckers I don't want to know them, but if they're harmless I'll leave them alone.

I have seen them each summer only, so I guess they have a pupal stage that I'm not able to associate with them at this stage.

Look like wasps to me, don;t know if they are European wasps, might be worth sending a picture to the Ag dept just to be sure.

What do you think this is Faye. I was going to bring it in for you tomorrow but I thought it would be better to let him live. Rather than endure :poke: for a week or two. Hehe :duck:

Well, well, well. I took your advice, EB, and sent the pic of my wasps to the Ag Department.

Turns out they are male Hairy Flower Wasps, native to Australia, and they cluster like that while waiting for the females to emerge (what's new in the world  )

I'm told that they are parasites of the lavae of scarab beetles, so maybe I'll just leave them be to get on with whatever they're getting on with.

Well there you go, never heard of them before... Nice to have government departments like the Ag department on hand, and very quick response...
