We have had a really awful time with white fly for ages....but apart from sticky traps I waited....and waited...and waited for the natural predators to arrive....and they have  The lacewings are moving in....there is larvae wandering amongst the white fly, and eggs have now been laid on the leaves........ Disagree Duff, I left some sacrificial kale last year to keep the aphids of my other veggies and deliberately didn't Dipel, the lady bugs and grub wasps built up to such large numbers I didn't have to spray Dipel all summer. I say let nature find a balance. |

I'm also not sure that Dipel is ideal for white fly?? I thought Neem or white oil was for white fly. But I am leaving it to nature now- it will be really interesting to see how it changes! |

I put the dipel in with my compost tea, so it gets sprayed on the plants in the dirt garden all the time. Never see white fly out there. So its a mix of the bacteria and brix count on the leaves that turns a lot of the insects away. In the AP system I use AP water and don't seem to have a problem. Predator insects are great, but not having problem insects to start with is always better. Now if I can only get fruit fly under control

Not having to go to the shop to buy dipel > than a few bad bugs and a a lot of predator insects. Fruit fly needs constant attention Pick up fallen, fruit dispose of struck fruit. Plant marigolds,basil and dogs bane under your fruit trees as a deterrent. Try bantams as they dig up and eat the larvae in the ground.(they like more meat than regular chooks) Baits,I hang plastic bottles in the trees (not fruit trees) full of water, apple cider vinegar, molasses and yeast.They get in and drown. I do OK still get some fruit fly but still get some fruit. A friend uses commercial baits,when he sees a few fruit flies in it,he mixes up some bait and lorsban and sprays either a wattle or some grass with it and all the fruit flies go there to die. Its a constant battle. |

Well....the lacewings have certainly multiplied and eaten heaps of the white fly....but the white fly are still there  At the moment we have left the kale as 'sacrificial', and as a food source for the lace wings. Hopefully in colder weather they will disappear ready for the next crops! |
