Looks great :thunbs:
Whats the black string?
Does it have a tin roof?
If you add a gutter and a watering system, bowl, barrel set up and a self feeding BSF its verging on perfection.

Well done

# spends the next few days trying to figure out how to make a watering BSF set up

Thanks Snags,

The string is the door opener/closer, pull string door opens and lets the chooks out.

It will have a tin roof very soon, and i'll be adding a gutter (left over from my shed) and a bio filter barrel that auto feeds a self feeder

I have a BSF setup already (well i made it on wednesday) and will harvest the larvae when needed for either my chooks or my trout in the aquaponics system. and if i have too many i'll freeze them or give to friends for fishing bait.

Super effort and it looks sweet. I was wondering how you were going to finish off the corners until I saw the post above.
Is the black string UV stabilised, been there before and ended up with a door that wouldn't open. Now I use clothes line.

progress has slowed a bit of late, every time i have time to work on it the weather turns.

so today i improved my BSF larvae harvester

i spent tonight watching the footy (carn the bombers) and redoing the maggot farm

I wasn't 100% happy with my first attempt, it did work at first but then i lost almost all of the maggots (they escaped) and the stench is pretty bad!!

so after a bit more research i came across this blog, and built one, just without the same drainage system.
http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/bsf-buck ... rsion-2-1/

here are some pics

Food scraps, meat, etc goes in, flies are attracted and go in the top T piece or any of the four slots in the side, lay eggs, eggs hatch, drop onto food get big and fat and eat everything and when they are ready to move onto the next stage in their life cycle they will 'in theory'
Image

and the inside, velcro around the top (below the slots) will stop the smaller maggots escaping. the grill down the bottom is a basic filter to allow any fluids to filter through and drain out some holes in the bottom
Image

the ramp!! and escape to the saw dust
Image

where they will circle and eventually enter the tube of certain death!! i might add a square edge funnel to this to ensure they enter the tube and don't circle the bucket aimlessly forever!!
Image

whilst the females will lay eggs anywhere this allow some more spots
Image

out the hole into the saw dust!!

Image

a slight angle will prevent rainwater running down into the tub!!

Image

I'll get it started tomorrow... can't be bothered tonight

Look forward to more photos and the BSF report in a couple of weeks. At the moment I am with my daughter in Adelaide River south of Darwin. Will build one of the collection buckets when I get home, looks like a easy design.

What do you use as food for it?

Cheers

i used corn flakes and crushed vita brits mixed with warm water (man it stinks), bread crusts also wet, and come cooked lamb chops (we have big blowflies here until the BSF get active again in spring)

starting to apply the chicken wire too
Image

and even got some outdoor roosts made, the stump and branches, was a tree that was pulled down in order to make room for the run!
Image

And i had to take a photo of the chicken wire... so, who uses chicken wire in their fishtanks?
