Hi Guys, Bad news, about 3 days ago one of my Muscovy Drakes had a rough mating session with one of the Muscovy Ducks, pushing her into a sharp bit of wire cutting open her chest. I didnt think it looked that bad from the outside at the time so I let it go. But today I actually got a chance to have a look at it and it is quite deep, there is a fair bit of dried blood around it so it is hard to see into but once you pull a flap of skin up it qoes in quite deep, It also smells bad. I tried to clean it out tonight with some luke warm salty water but I am going to try and get in and have a good clean up and disinfect tomorrow. Has anyone else had to deal with this before? What do I do? |

not sure on much else, but make sure she has somewhere warm and dry to sleep, away from the drake. Are you able to make up a bath of salt water for her to bathe in? that might help? but also with plenty of clean fresh water for drinking |

Thats no good. All I can say from experience is dont let it suffer for too long once you think its not going to recover. |

Dave if it is infected you have a choice of getting some antibiotics or knocking it on the head. Realistically the second option would be the most humane, especially in your climate where infections run riot. If the wound isn't infected use some very fine fishing line or plain dental floss and use your best cross stitch to sew it up. Super glue is also a good. You may have to pluck the area a little to make the job easier. A second pair of hands (if the owner of those hands isn't too squeamish of course) is a smart move too. If you can get antibiotics, fine but the economics don't add up for me. Otherwise honey is a proven natural winner. Warm the honey a little and spread on the wound. There are powders that can help stave off infection too. Keep her in a warm box with clean straw, feed it soft food and keep an eye on infection. Personally I don't bother unless it is one of Her in Doors' favourites. Duck hens are easy to come by, and injured birds rarely produce well if they recover. |

Hi Dave, It is much too late to try to close the wound now as any bacteria that were introduced to the wound during the incident or since will already be established and closing the wound will just just give them a nice warm moist home to form an abcess. Leave the wound open to let it drain and do what Jayme suggested. You will be surprise how strong the immune system is of an animal that spends its life in the dirt. Cetrigen wound spray (that purple stuff) can be bought at most pet and stock feed stores and may be helpful also, but can only kill bacteria at the wound surface as it does not penitrate into the tissues. http://www.myshopping.com.au/ZM--923233065_Pet_Supplies |

Thanks guys, I will give her a salty bath this morning and try to clean up the area, from then she will be staying inside in a box with clean hay and water. The wound is bad but I dont want to just give up on her yet as she is actually acting normal, as if she doesnt even know it's there? If she was clearly in pain and struggling to live then I would have no worries with putting her down. On that note the Drake that did this will be put down today, this isnt the first incident with him, he is quite violent towards the other ducks. Im sure he will taste nice! |

I had a massive drake named Fugly and he was always very violent towards female humans but not too bad with males, it wasn't untill he attacked my wife by flying up to chest height digging one of his claws 15mm into her arm and trying to mate with her that I realised that he was just horny and aggression is just a male muscovy trait. Still I had to respect hime he got further than I normally would have One drake and many ducks is the way to go for muscovies so that the violence is shared around and the girls can gang up on him. |

I gave her a bath and had a closer look, she has a gaping hole into her chest cavity, I'm going to put her down. |

Hmmm, bugger to hear that Dave. The Muscovy drakes can be pretty damn nasty, I had to lock my drake up because my poor female had lots of missing feathers and a bleeding back from his long claws... A friend made the mistake of letting him out once while the chooks were out foraging, he ran straight for one of the chooks and jumped on the poor thing. Hardly fair with a huge muscovy drake on top of the poor little chook, and he was hard to get off her.... |

I put her down I felt bad for her as it wasnt her fault and I really wanted to keep her. I put down the Drake aswell, dont feel so bad about him as he was too bloody rough on everything. Got some nice meat off him though. Im left with a sub-dominant Drake and 1 Duck, they have since already paired together. This Drake was never allowed near the girls before, the Bully kept him away. I'll try and get some more girls for him too. I think things will be better now |

just as proof how resilient ducks are, when I was young I had a duck that had part of its skin about the size of a closed fist ripped off by my dog and you could see the muscle and it healed up over the ocurse of a couple of weeks and lived happily. But that was more of a degloving injury than a deep penetrating wire injury and it most likely was a very superficial wound. With the purple stuff you get from produce stores it has chlorhexindine in it? and if you apply this after the first couple of days it will dmage the tissue that is repairing the wound, so only use it for the first day or straight away. Saline is the best and remember 9gms of salt in a litre of water will be non damaging to tissues. Nick |
