Australorps

I chose Autralorps bacause they are the ultimate Australian bred utility bird, they lay well over 300 eggs a year each ,although they are not as big as the isa brown eggs, and are bred to lay though hot spells. They grow fast and are big framed with fine white meat and are very easy to manage.

This is not my rooster it is a picture from the net but gives you an idea of the size.

My rooster has just started to crow and I have been pleasently surprised by the low tone and noise level, hope it lasts.

Someone on the permie forum had great results with Australorps, 5kg dressed roosters in a fairly short period of time.

I would say that my chooks would be eating size in about 9 months not sure of weight

Have also noticed that he has a very strange crow.....like he's just learning and cant quite get it right yet!

Got 2 Australorp hens today from the produce at Bald Hills, they were sold as point of lay. Don't think they'll be laying anytime soon, the combs don't look developed enough to be layers.

I like the poo diverter. Was going to do something similar once I get a central pen for them.

Yes poo diverter is a great idea.... Don't have to clean out the chook pen half as much, and any saving on cleaning is good in my books........

Plus all the poo in one spot. Easier to collect and add to the compost pile.

Yep, poo diverter works well......but if you live in a cold climate make sure you hang some material at the back to stop the cold air blowing up the slide and chilling the chooks backsides :cold:

. We hang plastic sheeting, which is pegged up in the summer to let the breeze in.

One of our Australorps layed their first egg on Monday, really didn't expect them to start this time of year.

It is a little early but your climate must suit them. I wish ours would start. Even the ducks haven't started nesting yet
